Are You A Teacher?

Today, a fourth grade teacher shared with me an email she had received from her daughter that is currently living in Japan. I wanted to share this with those who would also appreciate and relate!

The email read...

Ok so picture this scene. PLACE- the bowling alley. DATE- St. Patrick's Day. There are three women their bowler names are Bowlin Beth, Trish Dah Irish,and Mad Bowler. Bowlin Beth has a green shirt with a green bowtie. Trish Dah Irish has green capris on with a green, irish golfer looking hat, and Mad Bowler has on a mad hatters hat, a green shirt, clover necklace, a pin, etc. Mind you they are fully dressed, but these are the highlights. Every time they do well they are cheering, and just having the best time. They asked me to take their picture I said, sure and asked, "Are you teachers?" They said "Yes, How did you Know?" I said, "Well, I am a teacher and my mother is a teacher, and teachers have the best fun." I got the biggest kick out of them. Mind you they looked ridiculous, and were acting quite strange to the eye, but they did not care. These are the reasons I love being a teacher. It made my day. I know you will appreciate this.

Hope this email reminds you of all the reasons it is great to be an educator.

What is the best line you've ever heard or used?

Men are like shoes...

I've always gotten a laugh out of the "Men are like ___." sentences...found them amusing, but also thought they were quite stereotypical and not something I would ever actually believe. It was this week that I realized that, for me, men and shoes have one big thing in common.

No, it's not that I walk all over them. No, I don't pick a different one each day. And no, I most certainly do not prefer men two at a time.

With each one, a "aha" moment occurs at which I see and feel the attraction...and this happens most often very soon after the first interaction/view.

In middle school, I remember one shoe-hunting mission with my mother. I would walk into shoe store after shoe store, take a quick lap around the store and resolutely state that I liked nothing in the store. At first she understood, but after weeks and many stores later, she was ready to give up on me. I couldn't explain what I wanted...when asked, I replied with "plain white shoes"...but didn't like Keds or similar white sneakers. (Always picky.)

We walked into one store, I found one pair of shoes and said "These." (Of course they were not plain white.) Tried them on, and they fit wonderfully... went to the register and was the next person up when we decided to check the price. Unfortunately, that put us back to square one...and I'm sure put many more gray hairs on her head.

So, to adapt this to men and explain my position a little more.... There is always a "aha" moment when I can tell that I am attracted to and really want to get to know a guy. (Of course it's different from just an attraction.) And I've found that if that "aha" moment doesn't happen, I'm most likely not going to like the guy. Yes, I am stubborn, but that's not what this is. I am not making this rule, it is simply what I've observed.

With men, I also can't explain what I'm looking for. I've never really tried... but my taste has always been varied. Although, at twenty-six and dating more than fourteen men I am searching for that perfect fit. Where is my matching shoe?

As the year 2008 wrapped up I have been very busy. As many of you know I started a new job this year as an assistant prinicpal. I must say the job promotion has been a challenge, but what job in education does not have its daily obstacles. I have enjoyed every day of the experience, but with the personality I have I like to be organized and have a set game plan everyday. I have quickly realized that as I get older the only way to survive life is to simply take one day at time. My new motto is "Don't sweat the small stuff." A few months ago I started having severe chest pains. With my family medical history the heart specialist found it necessary to run a stress test. So, over Winter Break I took a stress test and passed with flying colors. I thank the good Lord above that my heart is functioning normal and with rest and relaxation I have been able to enjoy over the last two weeks my chest pains have subsided.

I would like to take a moment to wish each of you a blessed 2009 ahead filled with health, happiness and love. My family gathered again this year for our traditional New Year's Eve bash. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner, great company and good times as we brought in the New Year together as a family. I have included some photos from our New Year's Eve bash 2009.

Yes, I know its been a long time again between my postings. You will have to cut me some slack though I've been living life in the fast lane. Since the last time I posted on my blogspot I have...

1. Hosted a baby shower for my Aunt Krystal and baby boy "Brycelyn."
2. Started the dating life again.
3. Interviewed for an Assistant Principal position in Cumberland County.
4. Celebrated my 26th birthday.
5. Spent a week in Charleston, SC and Folly Beach, SC.
6. and Most importantly

I WAS OFFERED THE POSITION! I am proud to announce I am the new Assistant Principal at Glenn Martin Elementary School. I am excited to be joining the administrative team of the largest elementary within the Cumberland County School System.

My feet have already hit the ground running as I begin my new career this week. I ask that you keep me in your thoughts and prayers as this is a new adventure as well as journey in my life.

Hopping Into A New Teaching Adventure

When you first hear that someone is a teacher, one might think it sure would be nice to have the summer off. If you are a teacher you know that having the summer off is only a myth. This year I am moving uptown as my colleagues like to say. As the teaching assignments were given the last week of May I found out I would be teaching Middle School Science. Indeed, I'm on the move again. This will my third move in 5 years of teaching. There are advantages and disadvantages to being moved so often. As an administrator one moves a teacher for either good or bad reasons. I have been assured that this is to challenge me as an educator and give me the experiences I need to one day reach my future career goals. I am excited and nervous about the drastic change, but I realize that God only puts on us what he knows we can handle. What doesn't kill us, only makes us stronger.

I will be teaching four fifty-mintue classes consisting of two eight grade sections, one seventh grade section and a sixth grade section. The rest of the day I will be invovled in a new state required intervention program called RTI (Readiness to Intervention). This program invovles one-on-one tutoring with at-risk students K-3.

I've been busy lately with trying to plan how to decorate my room. I have finally decided to have a classroom theme of frogs. My classroom motto will be "Leap Into Learning." I have my work cut out for me on the agenda this summer

1. fill in the one hundred holes in my walls (the teacher before me loved to hang things with bolts, MEN!)
2. paint the front three walls dark green
3. paint a cabinet a lighter shade of green and trim in the same dark green
4. touch up the white walls
5. draw a mural (I will attempt to do this myself, I have made a sketch)
6. decorate the walls
7. organize the furniture
8. unpack my storage bins
9. hang bullentin board in hall for student work
10. look at the state standards
11. familarize myself with the curriculum
12. mentally prepare
13. post pictures for you to see of "our new pad"

The Mommy-to-Be

I know many of you have been awaiting some updated pictures of Krystal during her pregnancy. I have been extremely busy lately and unable to spend as much time with her as I would have liked. Our family meet and ate dinner on Mother's Day at Cracker Barrel. She finally let me have a sneak peak at her developing baby belly. She is actually bigger than the pictures show, but she is able to keep it tucked in and hidden since she has such strong abs.

It's Official Their Having a Baby Boy!

I am proud to announce that today Steven and Krystal found out they will be the proud parents of a baby boy. As many of you know all of the children in our family on Krystal's side of the family have been girls. However, all the children in Steven's family had been boys. So we knew it was strictly a 50/50 chance. As of today it is official the new addition to our family will be a baby boy. I am really excited for them both as they experience having a child for the first time. It is making me feel older and older because who knew I would be so eager to have a new baby in the family. I have been shopping since the day she told me they were expecting. So far the baby is healthy with ten fingers and ten toes. Please continue to pray for the mother-to-be and baby boy on the way. O' yes and the daddy-to-be as he has been sleepless nights ahead.

Life in the Fast Lane

Yet again it has been too long since I have updated my blog page. Even though, I haven't had the time to update my blog page I have been browsing through the pages of those of you who do keep yours up-to-date. I truly enjoy reading each of your pages and viewing the wonderful pictures of memorable moments in your lives.









I am so excited that for the next two weeks I am able to yield on the shoulder of the road awaiting the next roadblocks in my life.


Since last updating my blog page I have speed through life and several eye opening events.

1. I have officially lost 24 pounds.
2. I attended my uncle's 50th birthday bash in Nashville.
3. I reconnected with a childhood friend that I haven't spoke with in eight years.
4. I have successfully finished my fourth course toward my doctorate degree.
5. I have put TCAP Week behind me.
6. I was kept at school with fellow collegues, parents and students in a tornado warning that was thought to be heading straight for our school a couple of Friday's ago.

Yes, you must read the last statement once again. At 2:35 a few Friday's ago our administrator came over the intercom and announced we would be dismissing early. She was very calm as she requested that all teachers were to report to bus duty immediately. Typically, only five teachers are on bus duty each afternoon. So, I knew immediately something was out of the ordinary. As I reached the gym with my class I had no idea of what was about to happen. Within ten min. the school was in the gym and the administrator had announced to "teachers only" a tornado cell had been spotted in Cumberland County and we had to seek shelter right away. She began giving teachers and students vital information and areas to report because there were to many people to report to our assigned areas. I was supervising the last bus dismissed on the floor. Before I had successfully moved the students into the hall there was a power outage. My heart dropped as I was trying to calm myself, comfort the older students, and be responsible for the small students that I had been separated from due to the power outage. I must say I have never been so concerned for the safety of myself and/or others at any point in my life up to that day. A deputy was sent to each school to ensure safety and order within the building. The severe weather was right over our county as parent pick-up was about to be released. Therefore educators, bus drivers, parents and students were held at school until released about 5:00 that afternoon when the warning had expired. Our school was sitting directly in the path that weather metorologists had predicted the storm to take. As a blessing and many answered prayers the storm took a different path than predicted. During, that short time I realized that every day must be considered a blessing. This situation was the most eye-opening experience I have ever had during my teaching career.

... News just in No School in Cumberland County



I must say last night at 8:30 I was excited when I received the text message that school had been cancelled due to bad weather conditions across Cumberland County. I worked last night to finish my last paper for my Educational Leadership course, so that I would be able to sleep in this morning. As I got up this morning I began to process everything I could accomplish today. I must say I have enjoyed the rest and relaxation of being at home in the warmth of my fuzzy pjs. I finally got to catch up on soap operas. Along with all the distasers this month my new dvd/video player broke. So, I have been unable to record any programs for over a month. As the company says they assure me a new one is coming this week. As I was eating lunch in the comfort of my home and watching the news at noon I felt like a kid in a candy store as the announcer said "Cumberland County Schools will be closed on Thursday." Have you seen the snow in Cumberland County we have from 2-4 inches across the county and it is still snowing.

As many of you know Febrauray has been a rough month for me being overwhelemed, stressed, injured and sick. I think that I will be like brand new with this time off. Since I haven't had a free minute to post any new information or photos I thought you bloggers would enjoy seeing some new pictures. Believe it or not! I just got my Christmas pictures developed yesterday. With the overload of a full-time job and being a full-time graduate student I have done nothing but sit in front of my labtop and type. Thank heavens, my senior year I took that typing class with Mrs. Kirkham and the freshman class (lol).

Something Blue? Something Pink? Definitely Something New!

I am proud to announce a new addition to the family coming September 2008!

As many of you know this week has been a rough week for me with spraining my ankle, coming down with a cold, and being overwhelmed in homework. Although, things turned upside down today as good news was announced when I arrived home. Mom met me at the door and told me to call my aunt right away she needed to speak to me. I asked her what about and she replied, "she wouldn't tell me, just call her right away." As I dialed the number mom was peeking through the doorway to make sure I called right then. I immediately thought how odd. My aunt anwsered the phone and began to tell me she had some news to share. As I asked her about what she told me "you're going to be a cousin." I didn't tell her but I thought really "whose having a baby?"

I am proud to announce that after eight years of marriage my aunt and uncle are expecting their first child. Krystal is now two months pregnant. Steven and Krystal are very excited about this new journey that is sure to change their lives. Please keep them in your prayers as they embark on this new step in life. I am really excited because our family has not had a baby around since I was one, twenty-five years ago.

Working For The Weekend

With a deep sigh of relief Friday is finally here... I know that I have not been very faithful to updating my blog page. I just finished an assignment due for this week and since I am not eager to get up from my seat I thought I would update my blog page while I'm at my computer. So let me take a moment and explain why I am not so eager to get up. Well, let me begin by setting the scene of the accident. On Tuesday, at 1:10 CST my fourth grade students and I are getting ready to head outside to the portable where our guidance classes are held. As my class lines up we head out into the extremely cold and out of the ordinary windy conditions. I drop off my class and head back to classroom which is almost beside one another.

As I approach my outside door I trip, lose my balance, and do not have time to gain control. Down to the ground like quicksand I went. It happened so fast that I did not have time to brace my fall. I hit the concrete so hard that I removed several layers of skin from my entire right kneecap and have severely sprained my left ankle. While, laying on the sidewalk I realize no one is coming by to help me and crawl back to my door and pull myself up enough to unlock the door. I fall into the door and lay in the floor in anticpation that my assistant is soon coming. Thank goodness! As she comes in she panics and immeditely went to round up the nurse, assistant principal and custodian. They all thought it was broken so I called home and mom came to pick me up. The doctor says it could be a hairline fracture. Anyway, I am now on crutches with a foot swollen the size of a hot-air ballon. I truly work with a great group of people. Many children in my class are those of teachers and/or assistants and text message me to make sure I was okay since I did not get to tell them good-bye. The staff has bent over backwards to assure that I am comfortable and taking care of myself. I have worked on crutches for two days and must say if it's not going to snow I'm ready for a weekend.
